The simple 2p trick to deter flies this summer & stop them coming back – you’ll never be pestered in your garden again
WHILE many of us are excited for summer to officially arrive, it’s also the season that welcomes several unwanted guests.
Let’s face it, we’ve all be tucking into a BBQ or enjoying a picnic over the park, only to be rudely interrupted by pesky flies that try and land on our food or constantly buzz around our heads.
A savvy gardening whizz has revealed the 2p trick he swears by for deterring flies[/caption]But this irritation could soon be a problem of the past, as it turns out there’s a super cheap and cheerful way to deter flies in your garden for good.
And perhaps the best part of all? It costs as little as just 2p.
That’s because according to Rob Chadwick, owner of CGC Interiors, there’s no need to fork out on pricey products such as insect repellant sprays.
Instead, he shared his genius trick – and all you need is a few 2p coins from your purse.
He explains that you simply need to fill up a pint glass with water, before dropping around four to five 2p coins in it.
Flies hate naturally hate water and, the colour of copper, which is why 1-penny and 2-penny coins will work far better than more valuable silver or gold coins
Then, he advises placing it on a sturdy surface and watching it work its magic. So, how exactly does the 2p trick work?
Robert explains that there’s two reasons why the hack is so successful in repelling flies.
“Flies hate naturally hate water and, the colour of copper, which is why 1-penny and 2-penny coins will work far better than more valuable silver or gold coins,” he says, as reported by Daily Record.
“The coins and water together look far larger to flies thanks to their thousands of small, stationary eyes packed together – it’s estimated each fly has between 3,000 and 6,000.
“The water and reflection combined with their eyes, create a large water mosaic, which they’d fly away from in nature.”
It comes after Fabulous previously told how a pest expert revealed the simple £1 trick to keep houseflies away.
Tracy, a pest control expert from Merlin Environmental, credited citronella scents in helping to deter flies from homes and gardens.
“Citronella candles and citronella oil not only help to repel flies, but are also useful deterrents against mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, and some other insects,” she said, speaking to Express.co.uk.
Cintronella candles, which can be snapped up for as little as £1 from the likes of B&M and Home Bargains, give off a strong scent that is believed to help hide other odours that could attract flies and other insects.
However. since they dislike citronella scent, they will do everything they can to avoid it.
Keep pests out all summer
Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.
Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.
Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.
Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mossies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.
