Michael Owen suggests Postecoglou may be upset with the Tottenham hierarchy

Michael Owen has suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s furious rant on Tuesday might be down to his displeasure with Tottenham’s transfer plans for the summer.

Spurs gave a decent account of themselves against Manchester City and although the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was quite subdued as expected, there were a lot of promising signs with the Lilywhites’ showing.

However, what many did not expect is for Postecoglou to come out breathing fire in a post-match press conference.

The Australian had clearly been upset about something, insisting that the two days leading up to the clash had shown him that the mentality both inside and outside the club was fragile (Football.London).

What was even more bizarre was that having made that statement, the Spurs boss refused to elaborate on what he meant despite repeatedly being quizzed about it by journalists.

It was reported by The New York Times on Wednesday that Postecoglou had been aggravated because he sensed that a few club staff had been relaxed about losing the game because of the title race context.

Why is Ange Postecoglou so upset at Tottenham?

Owen believes that there could be more behind the 58-year-old’s statement, suggesting that he could have been upset after a meeting with the club’s hierarchy.

The pundit told Premier League Productions (14/05/24 at 10:50 pm) about Postecoglou’s comments: “He doesn’t look happy, does he? I wonder what that could be. Whether he has had a meeting with the people above. Whether they were starting to look ahead to next season already, which would surprise me if he had.

“That’s a head-scratcher. But there is certainly something that’s affecting and annoying him, at the moment. That will come out in the hours and days to come. Not a happy man.

“When you think foundations. What can it be that has changed in the last 48 hours? It can’t be the playing squad. It can’t be the facilities. The training ground is probably the best in the country. The stadium is the best in the country. It has to be something up high.

“It has to be behind the scenes, a meeting with chief scouts, chairman or whoever it might be, in terms of recruitment. That will come out, I am sure, in the next few days because that seems like a very big story about to brew.”

For Ange to say what he did and not explain himself is nonsensical as it was always going to create needless speculation on what he meant. Either the Australian should have been brave enough to spell out what he thought or he should have just kept it to himself.
