Your hands show signs of aging first & so many people neglect them – my dermatology tips to keep them plump and youthful

A dermatology professional shared her top anti-aging tips, including the body part most prone to wrinkles.

Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose spoke exclusively to The U.S. Sun about her skincare hacks.

The health professional explained that there is one often-overlooked body part that tends to be neglected.

“One of the first places we show signs of aging are our hands, which accumulate a ton of sun exposure, and therefore sun damage, over time,” Dr. Murphy-Rose said.

“We tend to focus most on skincare for our faces while often neglecting skincare and sun protection for our hands.”

The expert broke down some of the tell-tale signs of aging on your hands.

“Signs of aging on hands typically appear as hyperpigmentation especially lentigines or sun spots,” she said.

Dr. Murphy-Rose also named ” increased skin laxity and reduced elasticity” among the possible indicators.

“Thinning of the skin and loss of volume can make underlying structures including veins and tendons more visible,” she explained.

The dermatologist added that “dryness and a rougher texture” can also be an issue.

For preventative measures, the skincare pro recommended prioritizing sun protection.

“Sun protection is the most important thing to do, start early and you will thank yourself later,” Dr. Murphy-Rose advised.

She explained that everyone should be taking “measures to prevent cumulative UV exposures.”

This includes applying a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen every day of the year and using physical sun protection measures.

While T-shirts and hats are popular items for reducing sun exposure to the skin, the doctor suggested a specific accessory to protect your hands.

She recommended investing in UPF gloves, which are specifically designed to be worn in warmer conditions.

  • Keep your skin hydrated internally by drinking water and externally with moisturizer.
  • Always use sunscreen, even if you’re not in direct sunlight.

Dr. Murphy-Rose also advised anyone concerned about wrinkled hands to regularly apply “topical antioxidants to protect against the free radical damage occurring at the cellular and DNA levels.”

“This will defend against loss of collagen and elastin and protect against hyperpigmentation over time,” she explained.

“Keeping hands well-moisturized will help to keep skin plump and promote a more youthful appearance.”

She also emphasized the vital ingredient to look out for in your anti-aging skincare products.

“Consider using a retinol-containing topical to help promote collagen production,” she said.

Lifestyle choices can also help promote youthful-looking hands, including a well-balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, getting adequate sleep, reducing stress, and avoiding smoking.
