Kevin Costner halted production on the third ‘Horizon’ film to make the Cannes debut of ‘Chapter 1’

Kevin Costner first conceived of the multi-part story that would become “Horizon: An American Saga” back in 1988. Even after two films completed, he’s still got a way to go to finish it.

Part one of the “Manifest Destiny” epic premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. Costner, the winner of two Oscars (for directing and producing “Dances With Wolves”) and one Emmy (an Outstanding Leading Actor in a Miniseries or Movie nod for “Hatfields & McCoys”), knew he had to saddle up and come to the south of France. The frequently taciturn 69-year-old has given multiple interviews, in which he’s made it evident how much the partially self-funded project means to him.

At a press conference, he explained that he was three days into production on “Chapter 3” before he shut the company down to engage in promotion full-time. “It was so important to me to come to a place where movies are viewed in an open way,” he said.

He also made it clear that he needs to raise more dough. He joked that if everyone left the press room, walked out to the harbor, stood in front of one boat, and “didn’t let those rich people off” with a promise of coming to the red carpet, he’d end all his financing woes.

Then he told a weird story that involved singing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Critic reactions to the first part of “Horizon” were mixed, with many saying that though it had grandeur and scope, it felt more like a television event similar to the ratings and awards juggernaut “Yellowstone.”

“The movie is a journey. It’s not a plot movie,” Costner said during a different interview

In addition to himself, the “Horizon: An American Saga” stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Rooker, Jena Malone, Wasé Chief, Abby Lee and more. “Chapter 1” will be in theaters June 28 and “Chapter 2” will follow on August 16. After that? Look to the west.
