I make a year’s worth of laundry detergent for about $30 – it’s cheaper with my Amazon trick & only takes minutes to mix

LAUNDRY is one of those chores that has to be done regularly and a DIY recipe can make the job way cheaper.

In her viral video, Caroline (@diy_day2day) revealed the budget-friendly ingredients she swears by when cleaning her clothes.

First, she grates six bars of Kirk’s Gentle Castile Soap into a bowl.

A pack of four is available for $7.44 from Target, though Caroline recommends bulk buying the product from Amazon to make the recipe even cheaper.

Castile soap is a popular ingredient for DIY laundry mixes.

Another TikToker, Jenn Darling (@crunchydarlingemplover), included it in her own recipe.

The Spruce suggests using one-third to half a cup of castile soap in a normal-sized load of laundry.

After grating the soap, Caroline added two boxes each of the Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster, $5, and Borax Multi-Purpose Cleaner, $5.

She then mixed in four cups of baking soda, followed by a few drops of her favorite essential oil.

Baking soda is a bit of a miracle ingredient for cleaning, with many experts recommending it as a helpful tool to remove smells.

Finally, Caroline said her “skin can’t take” fragrances in laundry products, so she uses essential oils in her own mix.

The entire preparation process only took her minutes to carry out and cost $30.

She stores the mix in glass jars and recommends using two tablespoons per load of laundry.

Her followers shared their thoughts on the homemade hack in the comments section.

“Finally, someone who doesn’t use gain powder and scent beads, etc. Like, that’s missing the whole point!!!” wrote one viewer.

How does baking soda help with laundry?

Baking soda’s alkaline levels make it an ideal addition to your laundry routine.

It can be used to:

  • Replace detergent, fabric softener, and bleach.
  • Treat perspiration stains.
  • Eliminate stale smells on delicate clothing.
  • Brighten whites.
  • Eliminate perfume stains.
  • Treat dry-cleanable clothing.
  • Clean grease spots without water.
  • Freshen smelly hampers.
  • Remove ink stains from leather.
  • Remove scuff marks from shoes.

“[I’m] definitely trying this,” said another impressed TikTok user.

“At some health food stores, you can buy bags of soap flakes. I used to do this to save myself a bit of time,” suggested a third person.

“I love making my own detergent and I make sure it’s scent-free,” said another follower.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m going to try this. Laundry stuff [is] soooooooo expensive, it is CRAZY,” wrote one viewer.

“My grandma used to make laundry detergent for my mom and this unlocked a memory of making it with her,” commented another person.
