OpenAI Stops Use of Scarlett Johansson-Like Voice for 'Sky' on Voice Mode Feature
One of the voice characters on OpenAI‘s “Voice Mode” feature sounded JUST like Scarlett Johansson!
Amid criticism, the AI startup company has now paused the use of the voice, called “Sky,” the company confirmed in a statement late Sunday night (May 19).

“We’ve heard questions about how we chose the voices in ChatGPT, especially Sky. We are working to pause the use of Sky while we address them,” OpenAI shared on Twitter/X.
They also shared a blog post that explains how they choice the different voices for the ChatGPT feature.
In the blog post, they state that there over 400 submissions from voice and screen actors and the final five voices were chosen and flew out to San Francisco to record for the feature.
“We spoke with each actor about the vision for human-AI voice interactions and OpenAI, and discussed the technology’s capabilities, limitations, and the risks involved, as well as the safeguards we have implemented,” the company said. “It was important to us that each actor understood the scope and intentions of Voice Mode before committing to the project.”
“We support the creative community and worked closely with the voice acting industry to ensure we took the right steps to cast ChatGPT’s voices,” they added. “Each actor receives compensation above top-of-market rates, and this will continue for as long as their voices are used in our products.”
This past weekend, Scarlett‘s husband Colin Jost had to say a joke about the voice during SNL‘s Weekend Update in a joke swap with co-host Michael Che.
