SCSO: Man hides in someone's closet, steals liquor

HALFMOON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Verona man is accused of unlawfully entering someone's home in Halfmoon intending to commit a crime, hiding in the homeowner's closet, and threatening her with a liquor bottle, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office. John Rathbun, 26, faces several charges following this incident.

Charges

  • Second-degree burglary
  • Two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief
  • Petit larceny
  • Resisting arrest
  • Second-degree menacing

It is alleged that after threatening the homeowner with the liquor bottle, Rathbun slapped the woman's phone out of her hand to prevent her from calling 911 and stole liquor from the home. Police say he was found walking on Hudson River Road where he was detained and allegedly resisted being placed into custody.

Rathbun was arraigned in Halfmoon Town Court. He was then placed in Saratoga County Jail in place of bail, bond, or partially secured bond pending further action.
