ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — May is a big month to raise awareness for a multitude of worthy causes, it also happens to be Huntington's Disease Awareness Month. It's a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain.
It deteriorates a person's physical and mental abilities, usually during their prime working years, and has no cure. Perhaps worst of all, every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting it themselves.
NEWS10's Ryan Peterson sat down with the president of the Albany chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America, Cathy Peake, to learn more.
