Watch out for ‘Fallout’ in the Emmys race for Best Drama Series

Amazon Prime Video has delivered a sublime hit the long-awaited TV adaptation of the video game “Fallout.” The post-apocalyptic sci-fi show depicts a Los Angeles 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse devastates the USA.

Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the series follows several story strands surrounding different characters, including vault dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell), Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus (Aaron Moten), and a bounty hunter known as The Ghoul (Walton Goggins). The series has received rave reviews from newbies and devotees of the video game alike.

Lucy Mangan (The Guardian) observed: “For newcomers such as me, this intelligent, drily witty, immaculately constructed series set in the Fallout universe fully captivates and entertains on its own terms.”

Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Bizarre but intensely fun, ‘Fallout’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen; for that reason alone, you won’t be able to turn away.”

Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) declared the show to be “a clever and volatile cocktail consisting of social commentary, over-the-top action sequences, quirky dialogue and a steady stream of surprising twists, set against the backdrop of the obligatory dystopian future.”

William Goodman (The Wrap) explained: “Finding a tonal balance between the drama and the comedy is a razor’s edge, but ‘Fallout’ makes it look effortless. As a result, spending time in this hardened world is as fun, engaging, and engrossing as the games.”

Jared Downing (Slate) summarized: “The way forward for film and TV adaptations of video games is to follow the ‘Fallout’ model.”

As a result, we think “Fallout” will be a serious contender at this year’s Emmys across multiple categories, including Best Drama Series. We predict it will contend against “The Crown,” “The Morning Show,” “Shōgun,” “The Gilded Age,” Slow Horses,” “The Curse,” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”

This shouldn’t be a surprise, either, as “Fallout” has already garnered awards traction this year. It is nominated at the upcoming Gotham Awards for both Best Breakthrough Drama Series and Best Drama Actor for Goggins. This could well be a prelude to Emmy nominations.

We already know that “Fallout” will appeal to TV academy members, too. Another video-game adaptation “The Last of Us” secured multiple nominations last year including a bid for Best Drama Series. So, the days of voters overlooking video game adaptations are far behind us. If “The Last of Us” can secure a nomination for Best Drama Series, so, too, can “Fallout.”

Meanwhile, we know that Emmy voters like nominating genre shows such as “The Last of Us” or “Fallout” with the likes of “House of the Dragon,” “Andor,” “Stranger Things,” “The Mandalorian,” “The Boys,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Westworld” all receiving citations for the top award.

“Westworld” is notable here, in particular. While Wagner and Robertson-Dworet created “Fallout,” Jonathan Nolan serves as executive producer. Nolan created “Westworld” (with Lisa Joy, who also produces “Fallout”) and received two nominations for Best Drama Series for that sci-fi show. Voters clearly like Nolan’s work as a creator and “Fallout” could reap him further awards.

And “The Boys” is also important. That superhero show is another Prime Video property and it became the first of the streamer’s original programs to land a nomination for Best Drama Series. That broke down the wall and “Fallout” could continue Amazon’s charge forward with awards recognition.
