The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations of Afghanistan announced the return of 2,769 Afghan migrants from Iran and 665 others from Pakistan to the country, both voluntarily and involuntarily.

According to the ministry’s statement on its official social media platform X, these migrants entered the country through the Islam Qala and Torkham borders on May 20 and 21.

The ministry reported that 1,189 returning migrants from Iran and Pakistan have been referred to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to receive food and non-food assistance.

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations of the Taliban reiterated that ten thousand Afghanis in assistance and healthcare services have been provided for 92 returning families from Pakistan.

Despite ongoing reactions from human rights organizations, the expulsion of Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan continues.

Previously, close to three thousand Afghan migrants were expelled from Iran and Pakistan and then returned to the country.

According to the International Organization for Migration statistics from January 2023 to April 2024, over one and a half million Afghan migrants have returned to their country from Iran and Pakistan.

This influx of returnees occurs against the backdrop of a dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. The returnees are confronted with numerous challenges, including severe shortages of water, healthcare facilities, job opportunities, and adequate shelter.

The ongoing crisis exacerbates their already precarious situation, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive support and assistance to address their pressing needs and ensure their well-being as they reintegrate into the country.
