15 residential houses destroyed after mountain slide in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan

Local officials of the interim government in Badakhshan province report that a mountain slide in the Raghistan district has led to the destruction of 15 residential houses.

Hikmatullah Mohammadi, the information officer of the Badakhshan province, stated in a newsletter that the incident occurred around 8 p.m. last night, Tuesday, May 21 in the areas of Rowinch and Khifch in this district.

According to officials, 26 other houses are threatened with collapse as a result of this event.

The newsletter mentions that “these houses were located around the mountain, and the local people timely moved their belongings to another place.

This comes as heavy rains and devastating floods in recent weeks have caused casualties and extensive financial damage in several provinces of the country.

Additionally, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that recent destructive floods in the northeastern and northwestern regions of the country have destroyed 80,000 hectares of land.

This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis in the country, exacerbated by the forced deportation of Afghan migrants from Pakistan and Iran, facing several challenges, including a lack of foodstuffs, medical care, drinking water, and job opportunities.

Furthermore, the situation is compounded by the plight of Afghan refugees in neighboring countries, where they endure similar hardships and struggle to access basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare.
