Second boy, 13, dies days after getting into difficulty in river

A second boy has died after two children got into difficulty in the River Tyne in Northumberland on Saturday.

Aras Rudzianskas, 13, from Newcastle, died in hospital on Tuesday, Northumbria Police said.

Fourteen-year-old David Radut, also from Newcastle, died at the scene near the bridge at Ovingham on Saturday.

Chief Superintendent Sam Rennison, of Northumbria Police, said: ‘Our sincerest sympathies go to the loved ones of both boys and we will continue to provide whatever support we can at this devastating time.

‘Since Saturday, our thoughts and those of the wider community have been with the families and friends of those affected.

‘We would ask that the public continue to respect the privacy of the families both online and in the community.’

The parents of both boys continue to be supported by specially-trained officers.

Aras was rescued from the water shortly after emergency services arrived on the scene, while David’s body was recovered on Saturday night.

Chief Superintendent Helena Barron said: ‘This is an absolutely tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families of both boys at this difficult time as we continue to support them.

‘A number of agencies were involved in the incident and their support was hugely appreciated.

‘It is with great sadness that we could not provide a more positive update.’

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said on Saturday: ‘We were called to reports of concerns of two people in the water in Ovingham at 3.30pm.

‘We dispatched our full Hazardous Area Response Team as well as two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader and an officer. We also requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.’
