I kicked my 72-year-old MIL out of my home at night – my husband was furious but people agree she crossed the line

AN ANGRY woman has opened up about why she kicked her 72-year-old mother-in-law out at night.

She explained that even though her husband was furious, her mother-in-law crossed the line by tossing her possessions.

Redditor NoMaybe3163 shared the family drama in a viral post.

She explained that she normally has a “decent” relationship with the in-law.

“She’s quite sweet and warm. She is, however, a little… over-controlling? Overprotective?” she said.

“I’m not sure of the exact word, but she has very strong ideas about things and no sense of boundaries.”

In the past, the Redditor has found herself irritated by the mother-in-law’s inconsiderate behavior, even when she’s done sweet things, such as making food for them.

“For example, when she stays at our house she takes over the kitchen completely and insists on cooking all our meals,” she said.

“She cooks wonderfully, but she won’t let me help her at all, and puts everything away in the wrong places – and then insists that her way is more logical.”

The Redditor explained that her mother-in-law had offered to stay over for six months while she’s pregnant to help prepare for the baby.

After arriving, she immediately began “cleaning” the house but the Redditor was angered by her trashy behavior.

“I like collecting things from garage sales and such. Things like little sculptures and books and baskets, stuff a lot of people would consider utter junk,” she said.

“Our house is definitely overstuffed, but it’s reasonably tidy and doesn’t seem like a hoarder’s house or anything.

“My MIL, on the other hand, likes everything surgically clean.

“Yesterday I came home from work to find the house like a war zone, she went through my cabinets and cleared out everything she considered junk, and had apparently made several trips to Goodwill before I got home.

“I was really angry and I asked her why she would ever do this. She said the house has to be tidy for the baby, and that it would be ‘dangerous’ for the baby to be in my cluttered house.”

Her mother-in-law had tossed out not just thrifted clothes from her closet, but also baggies of her coin collection, a geode collection, two shelves of fancy china, an antique wood desk with a typewriter, and two “ugly” end tables along other miscellaneous decor.

As she watched her mother-in-law take out the next bag of her belongings, she explained that she couldn’t help but lose control.

“I kind of lost it, and I told her she could get out right now. She was shocked that I was serious, and she said she doesn’t have anywhere to go and it’s so late. It was about 9:30. I booked her a hotel room and called a taxi,” she said.

“My husband came home an hour later, and when I told him what happened, he was furious with me. He says I disrespected his mom and was ungrateful for everything she’s trying to do for us.”

In an update, she explained that a conversation helped resolve the conflict after she and her husband had calmed down.

The two picked up her mother-in-law from the hotel the next morning.

After an honest conversation, the Redditor established boundaries with her in-law.

“She was definitely annoyed but she agreed to everything and didn’t argue. So I think it will work out okay,” she said.

“I unfortunately couldn’t get my stuff back though… but I have plenty more rocks hidden away.”

People shared their reactions to the situation — many said she handled it much better than they would’ve.

“You are a much kinder person than me. I wouldn’t let her back in my house until she got all my stuff back from Goodwill,” said one commenter.

“Yeah, literally the least MIL could do,” agreed another.

Others encouraged her to continue standing her ground in the future.

“Very mature outcome on your part, but don’t be afraid to immediately correct or call out overstepping again or it will snowball!” said one viewer.
