Mariners Game #50 Preview: 5/22/24, SEA at NYY
Halfway home on this long road trip
After handing the Yankees their first back-to-back home losses this year, the Mariners are guaranteed at least a series split. If you’d told me prior to the Baltimore series it’d be a loss to Baltimore and a series split to the Yankees, I’d have taken that happily, and even more happily after Baltimore waxed the Mariners’ young starters with a solid game plan. Today is Bryce Miller’s chance at redemption after getting roughed up by the aggressive-swinging Orioles last time out.

Jorge Polanco returns to the lineup for the first time in a week. Josh Rojas takes a seat with a lefty on the mound, making way for Luis Urías. Luke Raley also gets the day off—for now, but expect that to change if the Mariners can get Nestor Cortes out of the game and get into the Yankees’ bullpen.

Former Mariner and hesitation move merchant Nestor Cortes takes the mound for a Yankees lineup that looks pretty much exactly like the one the Mariners have seen to start this series.
News:
Today was decision day for some minor-league options, apparently. The Mariners announced they’ve released RHP Dallas Keuchel but have added LHP Jhonathan Díaz to the 40-man roster, which is now full. Díaz will stay with Tacoma as emergency depth for now.
Game information:
Game time: 4:05 PT
TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Dave Sims and Mike Blowers
Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith
Stream: Apparently today’s game is also on Amazon Prime? I don’t know how the blackout rules work on that or if it’s extra moneys but it’s worth checking in if you have Prime, I guess.
Today in Mariners history:
- 1981: The Mariners turn what will already be the third triple play in franchise history in a game against the Rangers; there will be another triple play turned in MLB the next night (CLE-NYY), a feat that won’t be repeated again for 30 years (Aug. 16-17 2011, MIL against LAD followed by BOS against TBR).
- 2011: Félix Hernández tied a career-high with 13 strikeouts over 8.0 innings in a 6-1 win over the Padres to complete a 3-game sweep. He did not walk a batter, becoming the fourth pitcher (6th time) in club history to strike out at least 13 batters without issuing a walk.
- 2015: Nelson Cruz hit his MLB-leading 17th home run and Félix Hernández struck out 8 over 7.0 IP as the Mariners defeated the Blue Jays 4-3.
