“I took like a full year off,” she said about her break from dating. “I couldn’t flirt, none of it.” Kate added that it was an attempt to stop “repeating patterns.”

She said, “It got very uncomfortable for me in the beginning. Like the first couple months. My mojo was like errr [going down]. I was like, ‘Oh god. What am I doing,’” she recalled. “Then I had this one sort of breakthrough that was very emotional that I don’t think I would have been able to access if I had any distractions. It allowed me to see things much more clearly.”

While taking her dating break, she could talk to guys, but she would not give them her phone number if they asked for it.

While it was hard at first, she did notice a big change where she stopped worrying about checking or phone or thinking about flirting with men at events.

When it ended, she said, “I remember my therapist a year later was like, ‘I think you can flirt again.’ I was like, ‘What? I can flirt?’”

After, Kate noted that she felt less drawn to “wild” men, which she thinks opened the door for her romance with Danny. She didn’t date for about three and a half years before falling back into it.

“If I didn’t do that, I would never have ended up with Danny.” she said, “Because Danny, he’s just such a good man, and I’m not so sure I was attracted to the good man.”

Speaking of her exes, Kate joked that she was only speaking to them because of her children. However, she offered more insight.

“Let’s be very clear: If I didn’t have children, I probably would never speak to them,” she joked before noting that she is “more open.”

She explained: “I believe if you love someone once, you really love them in some way forever. Even if you can’t stand them. If you really loved them… it was pure, it wasn’t coming from someplace unhealthy… you’ll love them through anything. Maybe not romantically, but it will always be there.”

“I will always, even in the hardest times, be able to see the people that I’ve been with and that I’ve shared intimacy with in a loving way,” she said, adding that it was as “choice” that gave her peace and made it easier for her children.
