‘Awful flashbacks to being a teen in the 90s’ fashion fans cry as Primark brings back tee trend no-one wanted
THEY were one of the most iconic trends in the 90s and early 2000s and they have now returned to shelves.
But fashion fans are crying as the once very popular trend has emerged in Primark.
Perfectly paired with denim shorts, low-rise jeans or skirts slung low on the hips, baby tees were a staple of 90s popular culture.
The cropped, tight fitting t-shirts ended just above the waist and were seen as a wardrobe basic – as they could be styled up or down, for a variety of different occasions.
They adorned the torsos of some of the biggest icons of the time – Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Aniston, to name just a few.
The tees came in just about every colour with graphics, slogans and even crystal bedazzling too.
And they’re now back, and just as short and slim-fitting as before.
We’ve seen celebrities including Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner welcome the return of baby tees, but not everyone seems to be keen.
Primark took to social media to show off their new baby tee – a white, cropped, t-shirt, with red cherry detailing in the centre.
The clip was posted with the caption ‘In our cherry girl era’ and in the short video, we saw a close-up look of the new baby tee, alongside a pair of high-rise, blue denim shorts, and a red shoulder bag to match.
But the TikTok clip, which was posted under Primark’s official account, under the username @primark, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed a whopping 120,400 views.
Social media users were left totally divided by the new baby tee – whilst some claimed they ‘needed’ it, others described it as ‘horrendous’.
Not only this, but one fashionista claimed that the baby tee gave her ‘awful flashbacks’ to being a teenager during the 90s.
One person said: “Awful flashbacks to being a teen in the 90s and there was nothing else to buy.”
All the 90s trends that are making a comeback
WE might be in 2024, but fashion fans are looking to the past when it comes to new styles. So what trends from the 90s are making a comeback these days?
Claw clips
These hair accessories were a huge trend back in the 90s, but are now most popular among those trying out the “clean girl” aesthetic. Designers such as Prada have released their own versions, while there are thousands of colours and styles to choose from on the high street.
Platform flip flops
Again a popular choice among fashionistas in the 90s, these heels have made a comeback with designers such as Balenciaga trying their luck with their own styles.
Cargo pants
Once worn by the stars of All Saints, cargo pants became a popular trend for teens in the 90s. But they’ve now had a fashion overhaul, with stars such as Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber all putting their own spin on the trend.
Jeans and a nice top
It was the phrase that defined fashion for a decade, and now famous faces such as Sofia Richie are sporting the reinvented trend – pairing their own denims with a more sophisticated top. But are you willing to dig your jeans and nice tops out of the wardrobe for a second time?
Another added: “But why is the quality of the cherry so bad?”
A third commented: “Horrendous.”
However, at the same time, one fashion fan beamed: “I need.”
Another chimed in: “Love it.”

AS a child of the 90s seeing trends I’ve worn come back leaves me with mixed feelings.
Whilst pieces like scrunchies bring joyful memories to my mind, it doesn’t mean I like them.
For me as an adult, I can’t shake the feeling of looking like a 9-year-old on my way to school in a scrunchie.
Jelly shoes I don’t have that many fond memories of, most of my recollection is gritty sand weighing down my feet and plastic cutting into my ankles – so I would avoid the blisters ladies.
I love looking back at 90s trends with the glamorous supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford wearing simple slip skirts and oversized suiting, trends like that are just as stylish today and look as glamorous.
Mom shorts were huge in the 90s, as were Bermuda shorts which are big news this season, as well as fluid, wide-leg trousers.
Lets just hope that shell suits don’t suddenly appear in shops.
