I’m a dermatologist – the truth about applying skincare in the right order & the most proven product to prevent aging

WHEN it comes to optimizing results from your skincare routine, it’s important to do things in the right order.

A dermatologist also shared which product should be part of that regimen can take years off your look.

Dermatologist Dr. Michael I. Jacobs explained why using skincare products in a particular order makes all the difference in reversing the signs of aging

Dr. Michael I. Jacobs, a board-certified dermatologist and Associate Professor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, explained why it’s crucial to use skincare products in the right steps.

“If products are not used in the correct order, it can mitigate the effects of the product on the skin,” he said.

“For example, toner is used to balance out the pH levels of skin post-cleansing, so using it as your second step is important for optimal results,” he continued.

“Also, layering products on top of your SPF may alter the effectiveness of the protection, so I always recommend using it as a final step in your skincare routine.

“A general rule of thumb with layering your skincare products is to layer from thinnest to thickest consistency.”

A graphic from Neutrogena breaks down the order in which you should be applying your products to achieve the best age-defying results.

The first of their six steps involves applying a cleanser with skincare benefits.

A gel cleanser can can be used for “boosting” your skin’s hydration level.

Next, you’ll want to take out your toner.

This prepping step will ensure better absorption of the rest of your products.

For extra glowing skin, don’t forget to use a serum.

They then recommend showing your eyes some love by applying a hydrating eye cream.

Quenching your skin’s thirst can reverse years of damage.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, don’t skip out on using SPF.

They advise incorporating sunscreen into your skincare routine even if the clouds are out.

ADVICE FOR THE AGES

Dr. Jacobs detailed the most important products and practices for fighting the signs of aging.

He especially swore by using this skin-saving buy – retinol.

“By stimulating collagen production and increasing skin cell turnover, retinol can work to keep skin looking youthful as you age,” he said.

In order to keep skin hydrated which can help turn back time – at least on your face – he advises using a high-quality moisturizer.

A hyaluronic acid serum is also a good way to keep skin “hydrated and plump.”

He also explained how the most crucial anti-aging effects result from our longterm habits.

That means refraining from smoking and prioritizing a healthy diet.

If you’re willing to pay a visit to your own dermatologist, he recommends undergoing radiofrequency, ultrasound, or laser to “target the signs of aging you’re concerned about.”

FIGHTING FINE LINES

He also shared what you should use to fight fine lines and wrinkles.

“I recommend keeping it simple and focusing on hydration in your skincare routine, and also implementing a retinol,” he said.

Once again, he is big fan of Neutrogena’s products.

“I recommend finding a humectant to help your skin retain moisture as you age, like a hyaluronic acid or glycerin,” he said.

To help improve your skin’s health, Dr. Jacobs wants you to do more by double cleansing every night.

Wearing an SPF 50+ during the daytime will also help keep wrinkles away.

FORGET ABOUT IT

With so many items on the market, Dr. Jacobs understands how finding the right ones for you can sometimes feel overwhelming and advises what you can avoid.

“It primarily depends on your specific skin type and concerns,” he said.

“Some added products can be beneficial for the skin but aren’t a must-have in a good skincare regime, like a facial oil or hydrating skin mist.”

POURING OVER YOUR PORES

Dr. Jacobs stressed the importance of clearing and tightening pores.

“I recommend using a product that has the BHA ingredient salicylic acid included to penetrate pores and help to exfoliate the dead skin cell and sebum buildup within,” he said.

He is also a fan of getting hydrafacials.

EYE LOVE IT

He also doesn’t want you to overlook the eye area.

To best combat under-eye bags and dark circles, which he explained are usually determined by genetics and lifestyle, he recommends products to reduce the appearance of puffy under-eyes.

These include using an eye cream with caffeine or niacinamide for “brightening” effects.

“Microneedling with radiofrequency and PRP may be beneficial,” he said.

BIGGEST MISTAKES

In addition to following his clear skin commandments, Dr. Jacobs wants to help you steer clear of making some common skincare mistakes.

“I think some women overcomplicate their skincare routines with 20 steps when often the basics like a good quality cleanser, a toner, a retinol, and a moisturizer are the most effective products for skin.”

“Also, don’t expect your skincare routine to make drastic changes to your skin or reverse signs of aging, for more notable results, in-office treatments may be necessary,” he continued.
