Dr. Laura Geige is a UK-based medical aesthetician with experience in dentistry, injectables, and laser aesthetics.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she shared her expert advice for maintaining a youthful appearance.

SKIN SAVIORS

Each ingredient Dr. Geige “personally” swears by has been scientifically proven to reduce the signs of aging.

“As a dermatologist, my go-to recommendations often include prescription-grade retinoids for their unparalleled efficacy in stimulating collagen synthesis, reducing fine lines, and promoting skin renewal,” she said.

“Additionally, vitamin C serums are indispensable for their potent antioxidant properties, neutralizing free radicals and brightening the complexion.

“I also advocate for hyaluronic acid-based moisturizers, which replenish skin hydration and improve overall skin texture.”

She said it’s important to choose products that reputable brands sell as their formulas will have been tested for safety and efficacy.

“When targeting fine lines and wrinkles, I recommend incorporating a multifaceted approach that combines retinoids, peptides, and growth factors,” she said.

“Peptide-rich formulations aid in collagen synthesis and improve skin elasticity, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles over time.

“Growth factors, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), play a pivotal role in skin regeneration and repair, visibly reducing signs of aging.

“Combination therapies tailored to individual skin concerns yield optimal results.”

REST & REJUVENATION

Dr. Geige said lifestyle modifications should be used alongside skincare to maximize results.

“Emphasize a well-rounded approach that encompasses diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep hygiene,” she said.

“Incorporate a nutrient-rich diet abundant in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and collagen-boosting foods like fish, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

Prioritize evidence-based skincare practices endorsed by dermatologists to safeguard skin health and achieve lasting results.

“Regular exercise not only enhances circulation, delivering essential nutrients to the skin but also promotes collagen production, thereby improving skin elasticity and firmness.”

She said reducing stress can diminish the harmful effects of cortisol on the skin, minimizing inflammation and premature aging.

Among her recommendations are meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises.

“Prioritize quality sleep, as it facilitates cellular repair and regeneration, crucial for maintaining youthful skin,” she added.

QUICK FIXES

Dr. Geige advised being cautious when exploring skincare trends growing in popularity on social media.

“DIY remedies and unconventional treatments touted as miracle solutions often lack scientific validation and may exacerbate skin issues,” she said,

“Lemon juice, baking soda, and toothpaste, for instance, can compromise the skin’s natural barrier, leading to irritation and sensitization.

“Prioritize evidence-based skincare practices endorsed by dermatologists to safeguard skin health and achieve lasting results.”

Should you apply vitamin C to your skin?

Topical Vitamin C has several benefits for skin including hydrating, reducing redness, and hyperpigmentation.

According to Healthline, it may also help to promote collagen production and reduce the appearance of sun damage.

Research shows that it is safe for most skin types but may cause irritation in concentrations above 20%.

Experts recommend doing a patch test on a small skin area and waiting 24 hours to see if there are side effects before applying it to your face.

Discontinue topical use of vitamin C if you experience rashes, redness, or hives.

MINDFUL MAKEUP

Dr. Geige said makeup can be used to enhance radiance and minimize the appearance of fine lines on aging skin.

“Opt for lightweight, hydrating foundations or tinted moisturizers infused with luminizing pigments to impart a youthful glow,” she said.

“Cream-based blushes and highlighters lend a dewy finish without settling into creases, while satin or shimmer eyeshadows add dimension and vibrancy to the eyes.

“Avoid heavy powders and matte textures, which can accentuate dryness and emphasize texture, opting instead for sheer,  buildable formulas that provide a soft-focus effect.”

She said key ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid and glycerin which plump and smooth the skin’s surface.

BB creams with “light-reflecting particles” can be an alternative to wearing foundation.

“Achieving youthful, radiant skin involves a holistic approach encompassing lifestyle modifications, scientifically proven skincare products, and mindful makeup techniques tailored to individual needs,” she said.

“By prioritizing evidence-based practices and avoiding gimmicks, you can effectively combat signs of aging and cultivate a timeless complexion that exudes confidence and vitality.”
