Sunset Hills Blows Through The Pro 3
Sunset Hills Country Club’s Dan Abegg, Ken Highlander, Patrick Coyle and R.C. Martin (P) combined to shoot 16-under to claim the wind-blown Etzkorn Pro 3 Senior Golf Tournament on Tuesday, May 21 at St. Clair County Club. The event features a golf professional and three St. Louis District Golf Association members who are at least 50 years old in a one-day, two-net best balls stroke-play event. Skip Berkmeyer dominated the Pro Stroke Play event playing as an amateur.
Fighting persistent 20-30 mph winds, the winners blazed to 10-under on the front nine and held off the 29-team field by playing 6-under for the back nine. Coyle paced the group with a 68 with Highlander finishing at 70, Abegg at 74 and Martin at 81. As a team, they posted 19 birdies and an eagle.
The Algonquin Golf Club (AGC) team of Jamie Sheffield, Norm Toon, Mike Maher and Chris Ferris was runner-up finishing four strokes back. AGC kept the pressure on through the first nine only a stroke back at -9, but couldn’t overcome 13 bogeys and 5 double bogeys on the back nine. Ferris topped AGC with a 72, while Sheffield and Maher each contributed 77s, and Toon closed at 84.
The Country Club at the Legends was third with its team of Andrew Roth, Mark Muschick, John Siebert and Skip Berkmeyer. The Legends group also was one back after nine, but faded down the stretch as Berkmeyer contributed three of the four birdies that they recorded. Siebert posted a 75, while Roth closed at 77 and Muschick finished at 87.
An amateur playing as the Legends team’s pro, Berkmeyer captured the separate Pro Stroke Play purse with a 5-under par 67. Berkmeyer successfully battled the breezes to post three birdies and an eagle on the front nine. With birdies on Holes 12, 14 and 15, Berkmeyer got to -7 before bogies at 17 and 18 finished his day. Michael Herbig was five strokes back with an even 72, while Jonathan Robertson was third, also with a 72 and Ferris fourth, also at 72.
