Maura Corey (‘Gen V’ editor) on joining ever-growing ‘The Boys’ universe: ‘The show kicks ass’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

“The Boys” media franchise grew even bigger in 2023 with a Prime Video spin-off titled “Gen V,” which tells the story of young superpowered individuals (aka “supes”) attending Godolkin University. Editor Maura Corey is “super excited” to join the expanding universe because she’s a “huge fan of ‘The Boys,'” she tells us. “That’s my kind of satire … It just seemed like a really great fit for me as an editor, but also as a fan, because the show kicks ass.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Co-showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters oversee the project, with cast members including Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Little Cricket, Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap, and both London Thor and Derek Luh as Jordan Li. (Sadly, Chance Perdomo as Andre Anderson passed away in March.) Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg and Eric Kripke developed the spin-off series for Prime Video, and yes, a second season is on the horizon.

One of Corey’s main goals as editor is to “make sure that we had all of the elements that made ‘The Boys’ great and keep the universe cohesive, so we wouldn’t let down the fan base by seeing something that doesn’t make sense.” She adds, “There is a very specific tone to the show, and that’s why people watch ‘The Boys.’ So we wanted to honor that in a new world, in the spin-off.”

Since “Gen V” is a satire, the challenge for the editing team is to “always walk that super fine line between comedy, drama and action,” Corey explains. “So at any time you want to make sure that you’re getting the nuance of all of those things. And so, as an editor, you approach the scenes that are supposed to be dramatic very differently than you approach the scenes that are supposed to be comedic.” She champions the “brilliant” writing as helping to set the tone of the franchise.

Also in our exclusive video interview, Corey talks about collaborating with the visual effects department on some of the more elaborate scenes, how it’s “kinda crazy” when cutting between the male and female versions of Jordan, and why she chose to submit the finale, titled “Guardians of Godolkin,” as her Emmy submission this year. Corey then reflects on her three Emmy nominations for editing the Academy Awards ceremonies in 2001, ’03 and ’05, calling the experience a “dream come true.”
