People often find incredible bargains at these sales – known as yard sales, garage sales or neighbourhood sales[/caption]

They took to Reddit to share a picture of the jacket, which was almost entirely ripped to pieces down one side.

It was also shredded beyond repair, with giant holes and entire sections missing.

The jacket also had huge stains along one side and one sleeve.

“Hilarious yard sale find this morning,” they wrote alongside the picture.

“His reasoning was that he sold a Levis brand jacket similar for $2500 (£1,960) a couple of years ago, regardless of this jacket having no branding whatsoever!”

The comments section was almost immediately filled people sharing their hilarious responses to the post, with one writing: “It’s worth it cause this is the jacket Leonardo DiCaprio was wearing on The Revenant”.

“Rare clothing that survived a grizzly bear attack,” another joked.

“Does it come with the truck that apparently ran it over?” a third questioned.

“Was he selling the wood chipper he ran this through too?” someone else asked.

“That’s some Kanye West s**t, right there,” another wrote.

“A sucker’s born every day,” someone else laughed.

As others wondered why on earth the person had decided to price the jacket so high – despite the fact he’d noted “or best offer” on the tag too.

“Were the prices insane with all the items or just this one?” one asked.

To which the poster replied: “Everything was quite high, but this definitely stood out as ridiculous.”

“Dude thinks someone is gonna pull up with $1200 cash on them or something?” another mused.

“This isn’t as crazy as it seems,” a third wrote.

“Yes, it’s way too high for a yard sale and I realise most people aren’t going to be familiar with this market, but that’s a very old jacket (I’m guessing 1950s) and sweatshirts from this era (even thrashed to s**t) regularly sell for £785.

“Look up ‘afterhoods’.

“Again, a yard sale is NOT the place to move something like this, but there is a very good chance he’d be able to get a lot more than most people realise for this selling it online.”

How to bag a boot sale bargain

Becky Chorlton is a boot sale pro, and regularly finds bargain pieces to sell on for a profit. Here's her top eight tips on how to scout out the hidden gems at your local car boot sale.

  1. Be organised – find out when and where your local boot sale is
  2. Bring loose change, and empty bags
  3. Be an early bird to get the best bargains
  4. Have an open mind, look out for unique pieces and don’t search for just one item
  5. Search high and low – have a rummage through boxes, cases and containers sellers have at their stalls
  6. Buy for all seasons – you’re more likely to find a summer bargain in the winter, and vice versa
  7. Check your purchases over – make sure you are happy with your item before you hand over any cash
  8. Barter to your heart’s content – it’s all part of the fun of being at a boot sale!

And someone else agreed, writing: “Vintage blanket lined jackets are pretty hot right now, especially the distressed ones.

“That said, even though this checks those boxes, it’s priced about three times higher than the highest sold on eBay for this brand.

“Insanity wish-casting asking price for a garage sale!”
