Swimming this Memorial Day? Here’s when rain is expected to reach DC area
Listen to WTOP for the latest weather updates on the 8s.
Showers and scattered storms could pop up throughout the D.C. area on Sunday evening before potentially severe weather rolls in Monday, threatening to wash out Memorial Day events.
Sunday night’s wet weather is not expected to be severe. After a mostly-dry weekend, the chance for scattered showers or storms goes up after sunset.
“A few afternoon and evening showers may dot the radar late in the day but will be widely separated. Any that develop could have some intense winds,” said 7News First Alert meteorologist Brian van de Graaff.
There will be a slight uptick in thundershower potential Sunday night, but while the latest guidance suggests a “50-50 chance,” there remains a high likelihood that your neighborhood could stay dry.
Temperatures will drop from the 80s down to the upper 60s Sunday night. It will be muggy and the chance for storms continues overnight.
Will Memorial Day be a washout?
If you’re heading to the pool this Memorial Day, you may want to plan for a rain day.
“While a few thundershowers are not out of the question early in the day, the latest forecast trends hint during the afternoon and evening hours,” van de Graaff said.
There is also a possibility that some of those storms could be intense.
“Some storms will have the potential to become strong to severe with gusty winds, hail, moderate to heavy rain, and an isolated tornado. Be sure to stay weather alert, especially considering it is a holiday with plenty of outdoor activities,” he said.
