Report: Tottenham enter race to sign versatile French defender this summer
According to a report in Bild, Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan this summer.
Although a centre-back by trade, Simakan is also capable of operating as a right-back, with the player’s versatility coming in handy for Marco Rose, who has used him as a full-back on a number of occasions.
Those are two positions that Tottenham are thought to be keen on strengthening, which is perhaps why the Lilywhites are now allegedly exploring a deal for the Frenchman.
Spurs face competition for Mohamed Simakan
Bild make it clear that Tottenham are far from the only side exploring a move for Simakan, with Newcastle United also keeping an eye on the player’s situation.
In addition, Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen on signing the Leipzig star and are allegedly willing to offer €35m (£29.8m), which is half of his €70m (£60m) release clause.
It is explained that the centre-back’s agents have already started sounding out new clubs, with Simakan intent on joining a high-profile club to boost his chances of breaking into the Les Blues set-up.
Spurs Web Opinion
One can understand why Simakan’s versatility appeals to Ange and while the 24-year-old would be a decent signing for a fee around £30m, I can see Leipgzig holding out for much for the centre-back, who is contracted at the Red Bull Arena until 2027.
