The original Hulu series, which Netflix obtained, tells the story of an obituarist turned serial killer.

Obituary is set in the small town of Kilraven and follows newspaper obituarist Elvira Clancy, played by Bodkin star Siobhan Cullen.

When faced with the prospect of having to go freelance and losing her full-time wage, a young woman obsessed with death takes matters into her own hands.

Elvira soon gets a head start on her murderous work and begins to play a part in people’s demises.

The young killer’s problems soon start piling up due to the fact she also needs to support her alcoholic dad, Ward, played by Michael Smiley.

Simultaneously, new crime reporter Emerson Stafford, played by Ronan Raftery, begins investigating a cold-case murder in the town.

The official synopsis reads: “Elvira Clancy is feeling a little unfulfilled; although she adores her new job writing obituaries, she finds herself being paid per obituary overnight; when she accidentally kills someone in town, she discovers she might have untapped bloodlust.”

After binge-watching the series, fans took to social media and admitted that the unsettling story gripped them.

Getting straight to the point, one user said: “If you like a laugh and murder, then this Irish show could be for you.”

“Full of black humour just as Bodkin was, and set in Ireland, we love it!”  a second user shared.

Another added: “If you haven’t been watching Obituary on Netflix, please, for the love of god, do it. It’s Irish and about death, and it’s so funny and wry and more of that please”.

Elsewhere another viewer dubbed the show as a “brilliant dark Dexteresque story of murder in a small Irish town.”

Leading lady Siobhan spoke to RTÉ Entertainment last year and disclosed that there was ‘nothing I could compare it to when she first read the script.

She added: “It just felt very unique. That’s what I found appealing – it’s a bit dark and twisted but also a lot of humour and light as well.”

When asked about her character, she explained that it was somewhat odd she was considered the black sheep.

She expressed: “It’s funny because, in her town, she’s seen as the oddball, the weirdo, but the characters that make up the town are some of the wildest and weirdest you’ll meet.

“So, she’s quite relatable to the audience because she is quite human, but in this town of freaks and oddballs, she does stand out.”

Obituary has an impressive Tomatometer score of 100% with a 91% audience rating on the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Obituary is streaming on Netflix now.
