The Athletic have revealed that Ange Postecoglou is prioritising signing a right-back this summer as the Tottenham head coach does not believe that Emerson Royal is a natural fit for his system.

Over the last couple of weeks, plenty of outlets have suggested that Emerson has already played his final game for Tottenham and The Athletic has now backed up that claim.

The outlet points out that playing as a full-back in Postecoglou’s system is difficult as the players have to defend huge spaces, given how aggressively Spurs defend, while also needing to be comfortably receiving the ball central to help the side progress up the pitch.

The report says that while Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro have thrived in the role, Emerson has looked like he is ‘out of his comfort zone’ in the system.

Emerson Royal is not a natural fit for Postecoglou

As a result, Tottenham are expected to sell the Brazilian, who is said to be attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, with Postecoglou wanting to bring a new backup right-back through the door this summer.

The publication hints that Ben Davies might stay put as his ability to play at left-back and centre-back makes him a ‘valuable part of the squad’ but it adds that Spurs will ‘eventually need a younger alternative’ to Udogie.

While Emerson looks guaranteed to leave, I suspect Davies’ future would very much depend on the kind of offers that Tottenham receive for the Welshman this summer.

Among the right-backs who have been linked with a move to Tottenham over recent weeks, Walker-Peters appears to be the best fit, possessing the required attributes, being homegrown and having just a year left on his deal with Southampton.
