Redditor Sandshaman shared their lucky thrift find in a viral post.

“[I] ended up paying $2 for this box since I grabbed a few other things at the yard sale,” they said.

After making the purchase, they were surprised to find out the wooden box wasn’t empty.

“I couldn’t believe what was inside,” they said.

“Opened this up and it was full of silver, gold, and some gems.”

A quick search revealed that the jewelry was worth much more money than what they’d paid.

“One of the gems alone is going for $400ish on eBay,” they said.

Some commenters advised them to get the jewelry properly evaluated for an accurate estimate.

“What are the necklaces marked as? Make sure you get everything checked by a jeweler,” said one commenter.

“I bought a cheap chain marked 14 [karat] (paid $2) and it turned out to be fake.”

Others suggested they capitalize on their fortune.

“Wow! What a lucky find! Now buy some lottery tickets!” said one.

Another lucky thrifter shared her tips and tricks for identifying genuine gold jewelry after they found a good deal.

Redditor Tinselpandora explained that she carries around wet wipes when she goes thrifting.

A common trick to identifying real pearls, she revealed, is to rub them against your teeth to check for a gritty feel.

“I’m usually super hesitant to put anything in my mouth from thrift stores,” she said.

“But what I’ve done in the past is I carry a small pouch of wet wipes, and I’ll wipe one pearl and then try the grit test on my teeth!”

Her trick helped her find a 14-karat yellow gold necklace with real pearls.

Best of all, she paid just $4.99 for the piece that was appraised for much more than what she paid.

“I’ve seen around $450-$600 max, but I’ll be keeping this for a while as I don’t have pearls to clutch when I see a scandal!” she said.
