Transfer expert Dean Jones has revealed that Manchester United are now prepared to launch their opening offer to sign Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.

On the back of his impressive debut Premier League campaign, Branthwaite is thought to have emerged as a target for of the league’s big clubs.

The Daily Mail revealed a couple of weeks ago that both Spurs and Man Utd were circling over the 21-year-old and Everton are bracing themselves for offers from the pair.

The report explained that while the Toffees do not want to lose their academy graduate, there is a recognition at Goodison Park that they might have to cash in on the defender as they need to raise funds to ensure they do not fall foul of PSR once again.

According to Jones, United are now expected to test Everton’s resolve with an opening £50m offer for Branthwaite but he suggested that Sean Dyche’s men will hold out for closer to £80m.

Manchester United expected to bid for Jarrad Branthwaite

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “There is growing talk that Everton will have to sell a host of players or they will go into administration, and that brings much uncertainty about their star players.

“I think the biggest test soon will come in the shape of Jarrad Branthwaite, and Manchester United will definitely test the waters now they have a sense that the Toffees really do need cash.

“Everton are pricing him at £80million, but it is not going to be that amount that Manchester United go to them with. I would expect Manchester United to try signing Branthwaite with an opening bid in the region of £50 million, and I think they would probably do that early so that they know where they stand in terms of actually brokering a deal.

“Of course, Everton would probably reject an initial bid at that level, but you have to test the waters to gauge what the deal will truly take.”

Even though Branthwaite is a player that Tottenham evidently admire, there is next to no chance that the North London club would get involved in a bidding war for the England international, given the centre-backs that Postecoglou now has at his disposal.
