What a cool honor this is

We thought this had been done last year but apparently not: NC 751 from Kerley Road to Duke University Road is now officially Coach K Highway. The legislature approved it last May but apparently government moves at its own pace. Who knew?

It’s a tribute to an amazing career by Mike Krzyzewski that has wrought wonderful things not just for Duke basketball but for college basketball, NBA basketball and USA Basketball as well.

Look at the influence he has had in so many areas. It’s really remarkable. Next week you’ll see three Blue Devils - Kyrie Irving, Dereck Lively and Jayson Tatum - in the NBA Finals. You’ll see one more Duke great coaching with the Celtics, Amile Jefferson. Look at the executives around the league - Grant Hill, Mike Dunleavy, Trajan Langdon to name a few.

Team USA was rebuilt by Jerry Colangelo and Coach K and what he did for Duke and Durham is beyond belief. The five national titles, the 13 final fours, the 15 ACC Tournament titles, the 1,202 wins plus the less celebrated things but still incredibly vital things like the Emily K Center. It’s not just about wins and losses. It’s about character and loyalty and doing the hard things that no one sees on TV.

It’s a richly deserved honor and we’re very happy that he’ll see it every day when he drives over to campus.
