Stelling and McCoist make prediction about James Maddison at the Euros
Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist admitted that they love watching James Maddison play but neither of them believe that the Tottenham man will be in England’s starting eleven at the Euros.
Unlike previous major tournaments, where there have been several Spurs representatives in the England set-up, Maddison is the only Tottenham star who has been called up by Gareth Southgate for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.
The 27-year-old has been a fixture in the last few Three Lions squads but his prospects of actually playing in the tournament this summer have taken a blow, owing to his poor form at club level over the last few months.
Since returning from his injury lay-off, the former Leicester City man has looked a shadow of the player we saw at the start of the campaign.
Will James Maddison start for England at the Euros?
With Southgate having some world-class options to choose from in midfield and attack, Stelling does not think that the Spurs star is going to feature in the starting eleven for England.
He told talkSPORT (29/05 at 6:10 am): “At his best, James Maddison is one of my favourite players. I guess three months ago, I thought he would be a starter at the Euros for England.
“But now, I just wonder how he gets into that starting XI? There are certain starters. There is no question about that, Jude Bellingham is one of them. Declan Rice is another one. They are absolutely nailed on. Harry Kane will start. And Foden will start as well. Cole Palmer is knocking on the door as well, and boy is he knocking hard. A great position for Gareth to be in.”
Ally McCoist responded: “It’s difficult. Very difficult. I totally agree with you. But we both know things can change very, very quickly. I would say James Maddison is a player I really, really enjoy watching when he is on his game.
“He is different class. I think he is a shoo-in for the squad. But the way things are looking at this moment in time. Deary me! He is probably in the area that’s the toughest. I believe that. Right now, for me, James is on Gareth’s bench.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Maddison’s form had not dropped off towards the end of the season, it would have still been difficult for him to start, given that both Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham are nailed-on starters.
However, the Tottenham man possesses a unique skillset that no one else in the England squad does and Southgate will want to have him on the bench as an option if his side is struggling to break down a low block.
