PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A line of people a mile long backed up at the Powell’s City of Books warehouse in Northwest Portland Saturday morning.

The line stretched from 29th Avenue and Industrial Streets to Highway 30. Many people gave up, while others chose to hold fast for a chance to secure some exclusive deals on books.

"I think we always expect our events to be popular, but this is a surprise," said Powell's Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Shafer. "It always heartens me when people come out to buy books."

Throughout the weekend, the company is offering hardcovers for $3, paperbacks for $2 and mass-market books for $1. There’s even a chance customers can purchase an entire bag of books at a low cost sometime on Sunday.

Along with up to 40,000 discounted books, the event also features a beer garden, music, coffee, pastries, ice cream and more.

The Powell's warehouse sale runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.

The bookstore’s warehouse is located at 2720 NW 29th Ave.
