Polls: Modi’s coalition set for large majority in Indian elections

Polls indicate that the ruling coalition led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could secure a large majority in the general elections that concluded on Saturday.

According to the surveys, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to win a two-thirds majority in the Indian Parliament.

In the 543-member Parliament, a simple majority requires 272 votes.

Securing a two-thirds majority would allow the government to implement extensive constitutional reforms.

A summary of six polls predicts that the NDA will win between 355 and 380 seats.

In the 2019 general elections, the NDA won 353 seats, of which 303 were held by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The opposition coalition “INDIA,” led by Rahul Gandhi’s Congress Party, is expected to win 125 and 165 seats.

In his first remarks after the end of voting, Narendra Modi claimed victory without referencing the polls.

Without providing evidence for his claim, he said on X: “I can confidently say that the people of India have voted in unprecedented numbers for the re-election of the National Democratic Alliance government.”

These elections, in which approximately 970 million people were eligible to vote, were conducted in seven phases. The final phase ended on Saturday, with parties competing for the last 57 seats.

Nearly one billion people were estimated to be eligible to vote in India’s seven-phase election, which began on April 19. The Election Commission announced that votes will be counted on June 4, with results expected the same day.
