Four such examples have been picked out by Jack Mortimer of the Express, including a BMW model with a “reputation for reliability.”

Renault Kadjar

Built between 2015 to 2022, the Kadjar is great looking compact crossover SUV that shares the same platform as the best-selling Nissan Qashqai.

However, it features plenty of Renault’s well known styling features while also offering hatchback-like handling, good performance and plenty of good kit from standard.

A budget of £10,000 can be enough to pick up a good low-mileage example, with a choice between a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol or a 1.5-litre diesel.

Jack said: “Whilst the name may sound a bit silly, the Renault Kadjar is a good choice for motorists who want a crossover that features a good mix of style and practicality.”

Suzuki Vitara

The Vitara, which incredibly has been built over five generations from 1988 and is still in production today, regularly tops reliability surveys with owners said to be very happy with their motor.

In fact, he’s well known for being both spacious and fun to drive while also boasting great fuel economy thanks to its 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or themore common 1.6-litre that averages 53.3 miles per gallon.

Jack said: “Drivers looking for one of the most reliable SUVs that £10,000 can buy should consider the fourth-generation Suzuki Vitara.”

Kia Sportage

The Sportage, built by Kia from 2017 until 2022, is strong seller in the UK throughout its time on the market.

It features a fairly traditional and largely reliable mechanics under the hood, while also boasting an array of quality features including air conditioning, a reversing camera and a seven-inch touchscreen.

BMW X1

A BMW for under £10,000? You bet.

For family drivers looking for something a little bit luxurious, the second-generation BMW X1 could be the motor for you.

What’s more, it’s quick and reliable – with its 2.0-litre diesel engine that can accelerate to 60 mph in under 10 seconds.

Jack said: “The smallest SUV in the BMW range, the X1 quickly received a good reputation for build quality and driving style, even if some found it to be slightly noisier than competitors.”

This comes as a very different BMW, a super-fast M3 that’s done less than 10,000 miles, goes on sale for an eye-watering six-figure sum.

And elsewhere, a car expert has picked out his best “bang for your buck” motors that can be picked up for less than £15,000 – including a Mercedes with “timeless quality.”
