The St. Petersburg Economic Forum, held annually in Vladimir Putin’s hometown, Russia, made headlines this year with the presence and detailed speeches of Putin’s daughters about bioeconomics and the role of the defense industry in maintaining Russia’s technological independence.

According to The Guardian, Maria Vorontsova, Putin’s 39-year-old daughter, introduced herself as a genetic research scientist. She made her first public appearance in years to lead a discussion on “bioeconomics” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

On the same day, Katerina Tikhonova, Putin’s 37-year-old daughter, introduced herself in The Guardian’s report as a technical manager and rock ‘n’ roll acrobatic dancer, speaking “proudly” about the defense industry’s role in ensuring Russia’s technological sovereignty or preserving Russia’s technological independence.

The forum, also known as SPIEF, is considered one of the most important events of the year in the field of economics and politics, with some comparing it to the annual Davos meetings in Switzerland.

Russian media reports that this year’s main theme was “Establishing Multipolarity—Forming New Growth Centers,” with Putin expected to meet with world leaders on the sidelines. This gave the forum a heightened political dimension, especially since it was held without delegations from Western countries but with strong participation from South American and Asian countries.

Many media outlets have paid attention to the unexpected presence of Putin’s daughters at the economic forum.

The New York Post reported that Putin’s daughters, Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova, did not speak about their professional experiences in their respective fields but attended to “bolster the image of their father” at the forum.

The Guardian wrote: “Putin’s children and their allies are increasingly opening doors in business and government, showing that their elderly parents are striving to ensure the continued transfer of power and influence.”

Meanwhile, The New York Post quoted Ronald Marks, a former CIA officer, as saying, “Putin is now at an age where he thinks about his legacy. And as far as I know, both of these daughters are very smart. If these girls can attract attention and represent him, I think he will take advantage of this opportunity.”
