US resumes humanitarian aid to Gaza via repaired pier
The United States announced the refurbishment of the floating port, which had been damaged by a storm some time ago, stating that the process of aiding Gaza through this floating port has resumed.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a statement released yesterday that the assistance process has resumed through this vessel since yesterday morning, Saturday, June 9, with 492 tons of essential items distributed on the first day of this process.
US officials confirmed late last month that the floating port in the Mediterranean Sea, designed for sending humanitarian aid, had suffered damage.
According to a report by Sabrina Singh, deputy spokesperson for the US Department of Defense, following the breakdown of this floating port, the delivery of aid to Gaza was suspended.
It is worth mentioning that the United States constructed this floating port at a cost of at least $320 million after the closure of land crossings, including Rafah, which connects Gaza to Egypt, to provide a maritime route for sending aid to Gaza.
Construction of this floating port was completed at the beginning of May. Since its deployment in the Mediterranean Sea until the end of May, 137 cargo ships carrying humanitarian aid, equivalent to 900 tons, have passed through it.
The US Department of Defense did not disclose the details of the breakdown of this floating port, and CNN reported from its sources that this port, located near Gaza, had suffered damage and the reconstruction work would likely take about a week.
Work on this port began in April after it became impossible to assist the people of Gaza due to Israel’s obstacles and military aggression against the enclave.
The US Department of Defense announced at that time that it was working to open a maritime passage, and this port, which was built in two parts for this purpose, had cost at least $320 million, according to previous estimates.
