It looks like Micky van de Ven might have a future as a left-back for the Netherlands national side, with the Tottenham man receiving plenty of plaudits for the way he performed in the role in the latest international friendly.

Van de Ven is certainly no stranger to playing at left-back, having operated in that role a few times for Wolfsburg and also being used there in Tottenham’s final two games of the 2023-24 season by Ange Postecoglou.

The Dutchman delivered competent displays against both Manchester City and Sheffield United and if Ronald Koeman had watched those games, he would have certainly been tempted to use him in the same position for the Oranje, particularly how strong they are at centre-back.

The Netherlands boss decided to give the Tottenham man a run at left-back in the friendly against Canada on Thursday at De Kuip.

Micky Van de Ven is a hit in the Netherlands national team

The 23-year-old played all 90 minutes as the home side emerged 4-0 winners and the Dutch media were impressed with what they saw from the defender.

Voetbal Premeur gave Van de Ven a rating of 7/10 rating and wrote: His first minutes were awkward, but Van de Ven recovered and occasionally thundered over the left flank. The defender of Tottenham Hotspur is a serious option for the base.”

Football Oranje gave him a 7.5/10 rating and wrote: “At left back, Van de Ven impressed with his pace and strength going forward. He was one of the standouts in the first half before fading as the second half went on. Still a positive performance from the defender.”

With Koeman having the likes of Van Dijk, Ake, De Ligt, De Vrij and Blind at his disposal, Van de Ven might have struggled to force himself into the side at centre-back (although he deserves to play on merit). I would not be surprised if he is their main starting left-back at the Euros.

Despite playing out of position for Tottenham in the last couple of games of the season at left-back due to Destiny Udogie’s injury, he looked really comfortable operating out side.

It begs the question, should he have been moved there earlier rather than having Oliver Skipp and Emerson Royal deputies, especially after Radu Dragusin proved to be a solid partner for Cristian Romero.
