Report: Postecoglou is prioritising new signing due to concerns about 23-year-old

According to Football Insider, signing another top-class centre-back is considered a priority by Tottenham this summer as there are concerns internally about the fitness and disciplinary record of their starting centre-backs.

Ange Postecoglou has himself confirmed that Spurs want to add further reinforcements in central defence this summer (The Standard) and I can understand why the Australian would want another option at the back, with the Lilywhites back in Europe next season.

One would have thought that the North London club would pursue a relatively cheaper or younger option, given that Postecolgou already has three top central defenders at his disposal.

It would also stand to reason that an addition in that area of the pitch is not as much of a priority as new faces in midfield, attack and perhaps full-back.

However, Football Insider claim that centre-back is seen as a priority area to address by Spurs this summer ahead of the summer transfer window.

Spurs want a new centre-back to come in as cover

This is because there are concerns over Micky Van de Ven’s hamstring problems after the Dutchman missed 16 games last season.

There are said to be worries about Cristian Romero’s tendency to get suspended after the Argentine picked up six yellow cards and a red card last season.

The publication adds that Tottenham are thus on the lookout for another top centre-half, with Nottingham Forest defender Murillo one of the players on their radar.

There is no doubt that Tottenham will move for a centre-back this summer but I would be surprised if the club spent more than £30m on a new recruit in that area.

The club might also look for a versatile option who can fill in at centre-back as well as one of the full-back areas such as Riccardo Calafiori.
