Last day to apply for NYCHA Section 8 housing waitlist

Sunday is the last day to apply for New York City's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program.

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Sunday is the last day to apply for New York City's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program.

You can apply until 11:59 p.m. Once applications close, 200,000 applicants will be randomly selected to join the program’s waitlist through a lottery.

Families in the program are given a voucher when they search for housing, which allows them to pay no more than 40% of their monthly income toward rent. NYCHA then pays the rest of the rent on the family’s behalf.

You can apply for the program regardless of whether you live in NYCHA housing or not. The voucher only applies to housing on the private market.

Your household’s gross income must also be under the area median income. For a household of three, it's $69,900 per year.

For a household of one, the income is $54,350 per year. To see more requirements for the Section 8 application, including age requirements, click here.

Applicants will be notified when the waitlist is created. Each application is reviewed by NYCHA, and you can check the status of your application by checking out NYCHA's Self Service Portal.

It's not guaranteed that everyone who applies to the Section 8 program will get a spot on the waitlist, according to NYCHA. The people who do get added to the waitlist will then be interviewed by NYCHA to make sure they meet Section 8 requirements.

NYCHA received more than 400,000 applications for the program as of Wednesday. The waitlist has been closed since 2009.

NYCHA anticipates that a waitlist will be created by Aug. 1.
