The Standard have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur face a big conundrum ahead of the summer transfer window due to the UEFA’s squad rules regarding club-trained and association-trained players.

Tottenham have a problem with homegrown players

Tottenham will be back in the Europa League next season but face a real challenge in naming a squad for the competition. This is because UEFA’s rules state clubs must include four ‘club-trained’ players – who were on their books for three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21.

After deciding to release both Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon, Spurs only have four senior club-trained players on their books: Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, Oliver Skipp and Troy Parrott.

The report points out that Skipp could leave in search of regular first-team football while Parrott might also not be at the club next season.

In addition, The Standard reveal that four association-trained players – ones who were on the books of any English or Welsh club for three years between 15 and 18 – must also be named in the 25-man squad.

Tottenham currently have eight players who fit the criteria: Fraser Forster, Ben Davies, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence and Ashley Phillips.

It is stated that Rodon and Spence are not expected to be part of the first-team squad at Tottenham next season while Phillips could be loaned out again.

Tottenham may have to look toward the U21s

The report reveals that if Spurs cannot meet the criteria for locally-trained players, they would have to promote an Under-21 player to their 25-man A-list, which could potentially force them to leave out some senior overseas stars from the list.

The publication adds that this is one of the reasons why Tottenham are keeping tabs on Marcus Edwards and Kyle Walker-Peters, who would both be considered club-trained if they were to sign for the Lilywhites.

This is perhaps why Postecoglou will likely convince Oliver Skipp to remain part of the squad while the Australian could also potentially decide to keep Troy Parrott as a squad player for the first half of the 2024-25 season.
