Woman reveals ‘low pattern’ rule that makes redecorating your home a breeze – when in doubt, always do a ‘squint test’
AN interior design fan has shared a useful trick to make redecoration effortless.
The handy tip was passed along by an expert interior design friend.
Redditor Meredith505 shared the interior advice in a viral post.
They felt that too many people went overboard with home decor.
Instead of over-thinking and over-complicating the process, they advised viewers to take it easy.
“It’s your home. ‘Rules of thumb’ can simplify decorating, but you should always put your own use and comfort first,” they said.
“I can almost guarantee HGTV is not doing a shoot at your house.”
The Redditor revealed how they worked smarter, not harder.
“One of the most useful things I learned from a decorator/friend is to keep major upholstered pieces and extensive window coverings ‘low pattern, high texture,'” they said.
Another go-to technique is to switch up the feel of a room with changeable pieces.
“You can add patterns in easily changeable accessories like pillows, throws, and small upholstered pieces like accent chairs or footstools,” they said.
“That way, you can change the whole look of a room relatively inexpensively or move pieces around a house.”
A method also helps them figure out what colors work in a space.
The ‘squint test’ was also an eye-opener, so to speak,” they said.
“If you’re not sure if a small print on a couch is going to be too much, stand in the doorway and squint.
“If it appears solid, it will be fine. It can also be applied to see if two shades of color go together or two patterns.

“Sounds hippy-dippy, but I live by this: Never have a desk set up with your back facing the door — bad energy flow,” said one.
“You will feel so much more comfortable and relaxed. Don’t buy art from Target or Home Goods. It’s trashy,” they added.
“Your bed will look better if you have nice, puffy shams, a fluffy comforter, and a throw blanket folder at the bottom,” added another.
“This is not really a design rule, but I never put anything heavy over the bed. Canvas instead of frames.”
