The Pakistan Health Department has reported the registration of the fifth new case of polio in Quetta city of Balochistan.

According to Dawn News Pakistan, the National Health Department Islamabad registered this new case yesterday in the “Kanaragather” area of Quetta.

The National Health Department of Pakistan stated that this is the fifth case of polio registered in the current year, indicating the country’s failure to diagnose the disease.

The department considers the registration of two cases of polio in the country in the last 17 days to be a major challenge.

Earlier this month, Pakistani media also reported the registration of the fourth positive case of polio in a 30-month-old child in the Sindh province of the country.

Furthermore, the Pakistan Health Department stated that all four polio cases this year have been of the dangerous type of poliovirus (WPV1).

This is amid the fifth round of the children’s vaccination campaign in Pakistan began on Tuesday, June 3. The campaign targets 16.5 million children under the age of five in 66 districts of Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated.
