Uzbekistan provides 50 scholarships for Afghan students: Taliban official

The Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education announced on Sunday that Uzbekistan has offered 50 scholarships to Afghan students.

On Sunday, June 9, the Ministry of Higher Education reported a meeting between Lutfullah Khairkhwah, the ministry’s academic deputy, and Yadgar Khoja Shadmanov, Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Kabul.

The ministry’s statement mentioned that the meeting discussed resolving issues faced by Afghan students in Uzbekistan and enhancing bilateral cooperation.

The ministry did not provide details about who will receive these scholarships or the process of awarding them.

The Taliban stated that currently, 43 Afghan students are studying in Uzbekistan.

The Ministry of Higher Education, under Taliban control, said that these scholarships would be awarded at the undergraduate level but did not specify which fields of study would be covered.

Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, girls have been barred from continuing their education beyond primary education within the country.

Despite massive criticism by the international community, the Taliban administration had not lifted the restriction of education on girls and women in the country.

This comes amid the first phase of the 1403 university entrance exam that began on Thursday, June 5, in 16 provinces of Afghanistan without the participation of girls.

The Taliban have also imposed strict travel restrictions on female students wishing to study abroad.
