NYC subway station may be renamed after Stonewall Inn after lawmakers pass bill

Manhattan subway station to be renamed Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument station in honor of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, following the approval of a state legislature bill.

WEST VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) – A Manhattan subway station may soon get a name change to honor the LGBTQIA+ rights movement.

State lawmakers passed a bill to rename the Christopher Street–Sheridan Square subway station in the West Village after the legendary Stonewall Inn. The new name would be the Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument subway station.

The Stonewall Inn is considered the birthplace of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, with the Stonewall riots back in 1969. The gay bar was designated as a national monument in 2016.

A Pride Month drag show was held at the bar on Sunday. The event was a celebration of New York, diversity and pride, organizers said.

The drag show was the only drag show ever approved by the federal government since it took place on federal property.

The Department of Transportation sold a limited number of Christopher Street/Stonewall place signs in celebration of Pride Month. The signs are all sold out after going on sale last week at the DOT sign shop.

Only 50 signs were made.

The state legislature approved the name change bill on Wednesday. It now goes to Gov. Kathy Hochul's desk, whose office said she will review the bill.
