I’m a homeless single mum, trolls slam me for spending £19 on makeup – it’s not my fault, the system’s rigged against me
A HOMELESS mum has hit back at trolls who claim she can’t buy herself stuff while she looks for a new home.
Charlotte Hayes, took to social media to hit back at trolls who understand nothing about the current housing system.
The mum, who was made homeless a couple of months ago revealed she was fed up of the criticism after showing off her new Fenty lip gloss which cost her £19.
According to some, Charlotte shouldn’t have the means to buy herself a luxury item if she was homeless.
But she was quick to reveal that a lack of money wasn’t the problem adding that the housing system was ‘f***ed.’
She said: “So many people don’t understand how homelessness works in this country because they’ve never had to be homeless.”
“People need to understand it’s not about money,” Charlotte explained.
“The housing system is f***ed.
“It’s completely rigged against working class people.
“I have a first month’s rent, I have a deposit, I have a job, I have two jobs. No one wants to f***ing take me.”
Charlotte wasn’t sure what the cause was but she was struggling to get on the private renting ladder while she waited with her son in temporary accommodation.
Research by housing charity Shelter, recorded that at least 309,000 people were homeless in England today, including almost 140,000 children.
The single mum went on to describe how having basic shelter is a human right for all and the reason why many people struggle in society.
“For example, ex-convicts come out of prison and re-offend, because they have no stability outside of that,” she explained.

“This is why people are depressed and suicidal.
“This is why people are living with their parents in their 30s.
What to do if you're made homeless
In England, your council must help if you’re legally homeless or will become homeless within the next 8 weeks.
You may be legally homeless if:
- you’ve no legal right to live in accommodation anywhere in the world
- you cannot get into your home, for example your landlord has locked you out
- it’s not reasonable to stay in your home, for example you’re at risk of violence or abuse
- you’re forced to live apart from your family or people you normally live with because there’s no suitable accommodation for you
- you’re living in very poor conditions such as overcrowding
There are different types of support your council could offer you. For example, they may offer you advice, emergency housing, support to find longer-term housing or help so you can stay in your home.

While Charlotte and her son are staying in temporary accommodation, she of course noted that a stable home was much more beneficial for herself and her son.
And she doubled-down on her right to continue buying what she wants, especially when she had the money for a house.
“So, yeah, I’m wearing a £19 lip gloss and I look f***ing good,” she added.
The clip has since gone viral on her TikTok account @thestrawberryhayes with over 630k views and 57k likes.
People were quick to take to the comments and defend the mum.
One person wrote: “The system is screwed! I was told I needed to pay 6 months rent up front because my parents had died and I didn’t have a guarantor. 6 months of rent up front?!”
Another commented: “I had the same problem! Bad credit checks or they didn’t accept my application because they wanted a couple where they have the safety of a double.”
“This is so true! Me and my partner both have a joint income of over £40,000 we had first months rent and deposits and goood credit and still couldn’t get approved for a house even with a guarantor,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “Tell me where I can buy or rent a house for £19 and I will do it lol.”
“I used to work in a hotel and so many families would come in through homelessness, I understand you,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “Say it louder for the people in the back, people need educating.”
