Newcastle United defender, Kieran Trippier, has been reflecting on his career recently, and revealed his one big regret in football is the manner in which he left Tottenham Hotspur.

Trippier signed for Spurs from Burnley back in 2015, and the right-back made 114 appearances for the Lilywhites, registering 23 assists in that time, before leaving for Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019.

Kieran Trippier left Tottenham to join Atletico Madrid

As the successor to Kyle Walker, Trippier was a key figure in Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad, but moved on after the Champions League final. He even won the La Liga title with Atletico during his time in Spain.

He has since come back to the Premier League and is a prominent member of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side. Trippier scored one goal and contributed ten assists as the Magpies struggled to replicate the form that saw them achieve a top-four finish the season before.

Trippier has just one regret in football

In an appearance on The Overlap, Trippier was asked about any regrets he might have in his career, and he pinpointed the circumstances surrounding his Spurs exit as the main disappointment.

“In football? The way I left Tottenham. It left a sour taste,” he said.

Asked if that was down to him or the club, Trippier replied: “A bit of both really. I just think the way I left, I had talks with Daniel [Levy], it was difficult, of course it was. ‘Am I a part of the plans?’

“I went to the manager, I went to Daniel, I was getting thrown around like a yo-yo, I just needed a bit of honesty.”

I don’t really know why we let Trippier go like that, when all we had in reserve was Serge Aurier. I would have much rather played Trippier than Aurier for those subsequent years, and as he’s shown at Newcastle, Trippier is still very much capable of doing a job at the top level.

Mauricio Pochettino should have done more to dig in his heels and insist that Tripper was part of his plans rather than leave it in the hands of the board.
