CDC: First Arkansan contracts salmonella from recalled cucumbers

The first Arkansan has contracted salmonella after an outbreak in recalled cucumbers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

ARKANSAS (KNWA/KFTA) — The first Arkansan has contracted salmonella after an outbreak in recalled cucumbers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A food safety alert on June 5 confirmed one person in Arkansas contracted salmonella from whole cucumbers that were recalled by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. on May 31, despite Arkansas not being one of the states listed in the recall.

162 cases have been reported and 54 have been hospitalized, according to the CDC. 25 states and the District of Columbia have been affected with Texas being the westernmost.

The CDC's map of affected states shows Pennsylvania has had the most cases with 27. New York, Florida, Virginia and Ohio round out the top five states with the most cases.

The CDC said the cucumbers were sold in bulk to retailers in 14 states, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
