Sexually transmitted ringworm caused by rare fungus found in NY man

A New York man contracted a highly contagious fungus, the first reported case of ringworm caused by a rare fungus in the US, after traveling to the U.K., Greece, and California, and it took more than four months to heal.

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A sexually transmitted ringworm caused by a rare fungus has been reported for the first time in the U.S. — right here in New York.

The man who contracted the highly contagious fungus had recently traveled to the U.K., Greece, and California, according to health officials.

After returning home, he developed a red, itchy rash. The man took anti-fungal medications, but according to doctors, it still took more than four months to heal.

Doctors in France reported 13 cases of the ringworm, saying most cases occur in men having same-sex intercourse.
