Alasdair Gold has said that Conor Gallagher can play in a deeper role in Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham system, suggesting that the Chelsea man could be viewed as a replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Could Conor Gallagher be a replacement for Hojbjerg?

There has been incessant speculation linking Gallagher with a move to Tottenham ever since Postecoglou arrived through the door at the club’s Hotspur Way training ground last summer.

Given that the midfielder now has just a year left to run on his contract, Tottenham have been widely backed to make an approach for the player.

Just a few days ago, TEAMtalk reported that the North London club were readying their opening offer to the England international.

The report claimed that Spurs face competition from the likes of Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid for Gallagher and it was explained that although the midfielder’s preference was to remain at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea had decided to cash in on him due to their PSR issues and his contract situation.

It was suggested that the Blues value their academy graduate at around £50m while Tottenham are hopeful that a deal can be completed for around the £40m-mark.

Quite interestingly, Gold has suggested that Spurs may not just see Gallagher as someone who can operate as a number eight but the Chelsea player could also be viewed by Postecoglou as an option for the number six role.

Gallagher would tick a lot of boxes for Tottenham

Responding to a question about the 24-year-old’s position, the journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “I think Gallagher fits exactly what you’ve just mentioned about Postecoglou believing there shouldn’t be a distinction between those who play in the tradition six role or number eight one.

“Gallagher this season has been used as an attacking midfielder, a box-to-box one and in a defensive role in a few occasions. I think Bentancur, when fully fit and sharp, is a similar player in that respect.

“That’s not to say that Spurs won’t also look for another more traditional number six, but Gallagher certainly ticks a lot of boxes as a replacement for the likely outgoing Hojbjerg.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Oliver Skipp follows Hojbjerg out of the door this summer, I expect Tottenham to sign another out-and-out number six alongside Gallagher.

Atalanta’s Ederson seems like a great fit for Spurs but it looks like it would be quite difficult to get the Brazilian out of Bergamo given his form last season.
