Third time could be the Emmy charm for Denis O’Hare (‘American Horror Story: Delicate’)

“American Horror Story: Delicate: introduced Kim Kardashian to the world as an actress. The reality TV star has snatched up the majority of the headlines from publications discussing this newest, 12th season of Ryan Murphy‘s anthology horror series.

However, what makes “Delicate” one of the better “AHS” seasons in recent years is the cast as a whole. Newcomer Kardashian does a fine job playing to type but it’s the “AHS” regulars that continue to help this show stand out. Denis O’Hare is one of them. He has starred in eight seasons of the horror show so far, appearing in each of “Murder House,” “Coven,” “Freak Show,” “Hotel,” “Roanoke,” “Double Feature,” “NYC,” and, now, “Delicate.”

This season follows fellow “AHS” regular Emma Roberts as an actress on the Oscar campaign suffering from paranoia as she believes there are forces attempting to stop her from getting pregnant. O’Hare features as Dr. Andrew Hill, the actress’ fertility doctor who helps and hinders her throughout the season. O’Hare’s doctor is a sinister figure and O’Hare, predictable, eats it up. Critics agree, O’Hare is a standout here yet again.

Alexandra Ramos (Cinema Blend) opined: “He is always a delight to see, always bringing something truly unique and nutso… The actor does a great job portraying the most unsettling characters that don’t necessarily scream creepy but make you uncomfortable. I’m genuinely surprised he’s never won an Emmy for his performances. He deserves the recognition – and I can’t wait to see him in the show more, even if he probably has a lot to do with Anna’s current mental woes.”

Our current predicted nominees for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor are Robert Downey Jr. (“The Sympathizer”), Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”), John Hawkes (“True Detective: Night Country”), Joe Keery (“Fargo”), Treat Williams (“Feud: Capote vs the Swans”), and Hugh Grant (“The Regime”). However, O’Hare is an Emmy favorite.

He was nominated twice for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor — in 2012 for “American Horror Story: Murder House” and in 2015 for “American Horror Story: Freak Show.” He was then nominated in 2017 for Best Drama Guest Actor for “This is Us.” The fact that two of his three nominations came for the same category and same show that he is hoping to be nominated in this year is a great sign for O’Hare. Emmy voters clearly like his performances in “AHS” and think he’s a good fit in this category. He has great history both for this show and in this category and that could bode well for him.

“American Horror Story” stars in general have often found their way into this particular category. O’Hare has two bids here while Zachary Quinto was nominated here for “Asylum” in 2013 and Finn Wittrock landed a bid in 2015 for “Freak Show.” Plus, James Cromwell won this category in 2013 for “Asylum.” That’s five nominations in this category — only “American Crime Story” has garnered more bids in this category (with six) than “AHS.”

Anthology shows in general also do well in this category, with Wittrock, Édgar Ramírez, and Ricky Martin securing bids for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Stanley Tucci and Alfred Molina snagging nominations for “Feud: Bette and Joan,” and David Thewlis, Jesse Plemons, Bokeem Woodbine, and Colin Hanks landing bids for “Fargo.”

O’Hare has now reached veteran status thanks to his years of work in the industry as a film, TV, and stage actor. Voters like nominating work-horse, veteran actors like O’Hare. The likes of Ray Liotta (“Black Bird”), Richard Jenkins (“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Michael Stuhlbarg (“Dopesick”), Molina (“Feud: Bette and Joan”), Thewlis (“Fargo”), and Bill Camp (“The Night Of”) have all landed nominations in this category.
