Schedule for Red Line Rides: Bike Commuting during the Red Line Shutdown

WABA is scheduling Red Line Rides for experienced and would-be bike commuters, along the closed Metrorail Red Line stretch, between Glenmont and Fort Totten.

We are maintaining this page with the list of scheduled rides. Please send a note to RedLineRides@waba.org to alert us that you’ll be joining a particular ride or rides and fill out a WABA waiver prior to the first time you join us.

Here’s what’s on the books:

Tuesday, June 11 and Thursday, June 13 — Takoma Park to DC, departing 7 am

  • Where: Takoma Park metro, next to the bikeshare station
  • Route: Via Beach Drive/Rock Creek Park – it’s not always the most direct for some, but it’s always enjoyable! We’ll take Carroll to 4th to Aspen to Beach Drive to Rock Creek.
  • Leader: Claudia Trapp
  • RSVP: RedLineRides@waba.org

Wednesday, June 12 — Takoma Park to Fort Totten (MBT) — departing 6:30 am

  • Where: Takoma Park metro, next to the bikeshare station
  • Route: 4th Street to 5th Street to Hamilton to Gallatin
  • Leader: Claudia Trapp
  • RSVP: RedLineRides@waba.org

Our aim is to help connect community members interested in bike commuting, especially those who may be hesitant to ride alone. If you haven’t yet responded via our interest form, please do that now at https://forms.gle/CgbjDMZmUFRkyQ6dA.

A reminder, whether or not you bike commute: The Montgomery County Dept. of Transportation (MCDOT) has arranged a free 30-day Capital Bikeshare subscription for Montgomery County residents who live within 3 miles of one of the summer-2024-closed Metrorail stations. MCDOT will offer a minimum of 100 free subscriptions. To learn more and apply, visit https://ow.ly/B6Ep50S0Cga.

There are Capital Bikeshare stations in and around downtown Wheaton and downtown Silver Spring, and at the Takoma Metro station and downtown Takoma Park. Check out the online system map. From Silver Spring or Takoma, or can ride south into DC; west to Chevy Chase, Bethesda, and upper Northwest; and east into Prince George’s County. And e-bikes are an option for just $0.15/min extra.

Note that Capital Bikeshare offers free annual memberships for qualified individuals in Montgomery County and $5 memberships for qualifying residents outside the county. You must be 16 or older in a household receiving SNAP, WIC, TANF, SSI/SSDI, LIHEAP, Veterans disability (60%+), or Medicaid assistance.

Happy riding!
