The print edition of Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha have reported Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand has been blocked from joining the likes of Tottenham or Manchester United this summer (via SportWitness).

It was previously reported that Spurs and the Red Devils could fight it out for Hjulmand’s signature this summer after an impressive season over in Portugal for the midfielder (Record – as relayed by Sport Witness).

However, the Portuguese media now report that Sporting manager, Ruben Amorim, has blocked any transfer exit this summer because he views Hjulmand as an ‘essential’ player.

Amorim has apparently asked the Sporting hierarchy to make an effort to keep Hjulmand for at least one more season, despite the interest he is drawing in the transfer market.

Tottenham and Man United blocked from signing Hjulmand

Spurs and Man United are mentioned again as interested parties, while Barcelona are also said to be among the clubs in the ‘front line’ to try and sign Hjulmand.

While Hjulmand himself is said to have an ‘express desire’ to play in the Premier League, he also has an €80m release clause written into his contract, so signing him against Sporting’s wishes will not be easy.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs or Man United actually test the water with a bid this summer.

Hjulmand made 49 appearances for Sporting last season across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing four assists (transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion:

This sounds like a bit of a non-starter. Sporting are hard to deal with even when they are open to selling a first-team player. Look at how tricky those Pedro Porro negotiations were!

Tottenham do need a new midfielder this summer but I don’t think it will be Morten Hjulmand.
